Food Security and Livelihoods (FSL)

Program description

Food security and livelihoods (FSL) is a core component of our program strategy. In addition to providing conditional and unconditional food assistance, RRD ensures following a comprehensive program for food distribution using vouchers specifically for households affected by malnutrition. As part of RRD’s multi-sectoral integrated interventions, our assistance is provided to complement the nutrition activities at Outpatient Therapeutic Feeding (OTP) sites to help prevent pregnant and lactating women (PLWs) and children with Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) from drifting into Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).

RRD believes that livelihood protection and promotion activities are important in supporting swift recovery from disasters and in strengthening the capacity of local communities to face impacts of future shocks. In that sense, we provide assistance that includes temporary income-generating opportunities that focus on rebuilding and diversifying livelihood sources that communities depend on.

Our approach includes skills trainings and cash for work support to households headed by women, unemployed youths and farmers to boost their income earning opportunities or produce the most basic food items they need to survive. Accordingly, our cash-for-work schemes include rehabilitation of key infrastructure including roads, water sources and agricultural terraces. Establishment of vegetable home gardens are also amongst RRD’s multi-sector approach followed under the Food Security and Livelihood program.
